Bates stamping tips

  • Use a dedicated prefix for each production batch so you never reuse identifiers.
  • Keep margins generous to avoid covering hearing file stamps or footer captions.
  • Save a clean copy before stamping; Bates numbers are permanent overlays on the PDF output.
  • Before stamping, you can remove hidden metadata to keep filings anonymous.
  • When discovery responses require both Bates and page numbers, run the Page Numberer after stamping so labels never overlap.

Need to index everything?

Pair Bates numbering with a running list of exhibits so the judge can jump straight to the right document. Generate an Evidence Index or Document Index once the stamping is complete.

Bates numbering FAQ

Does this upload my PDFs to a server?

No. All stamping happens locally inside your browser using web workers. Your files never leave your device.

Can I keep numbering across multiple PDF files?

Yes. Drop in as many PDFs as you need and choose whether to export a single merged file, a ZIP of stamped files, or both. The counter stays continuous across the entire batch.

How do I keep the labels from covering evidence?

Use the Safe Area option to automatically inset the margins and pick from text, outlined, or boxed styles for better contrast on dark scans.
